Do you need new coping skills to get what you want out of life? DBT Skills are a set of coping strategies that can help you be more effective in your current life. The Skills were collected and researched by Dr. Marsha Linehan as part of a treatment for clients with severe difficulties with emotion dysregulation. They are one part of a larger therapy called Comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Not everyone needs Comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy, but it turns out many people can benefit from the DBT Skills portion of the treatment even if you are not currently seeing an individual therapist
What can I expect from DBT skills class?
DBT Skills class is taught in three different 8 week modules covering the following topics:
  • Emotion Regulation -naming and understanding your emotions, decreasing problematic reactivity to strong emotions, increasing the frequency of pleasant emotions, decreasing emotional suffering.
  •  Distress Tolerance- learning skills to tolerate difficult moments without making things worse by acting on emotional impulses
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness - learning to ask effectively for things you want, learning how to say no so people will hear you, strengthening current relationships, increasing self-confidence.

Mindfulness provides the foundation for the all of the other skills. To provide this foundation the first two weeks of every module are dedicated to learning and applying these skills. Mindfulness is also woven through each lesson.
